Since the Mid-1990’s only emulsified binders have been used for Surface Dressing.

We at Watterson Surfacing use the following types of Bitumen:

CATIONIC 40% TACKCOAT
Cationic 40% is a bituminous tackcoat that is used to promote adhesion between successive layers of asphalt.
ADVANTAGES OF CATIONIC 40%
  • Good adhesion between layers of asphalt
  • Suitable for hand-lance application
  • Can be applied at low temperature
  • A stable waterbased emulsion
Typical Rate of Spread 0.4-0.7 lt/sqm

Cationic 40% complies with the NRA Binder Specifications: RC380/2008 Table 3

CATIONIC 70%

Cationic 70% is a bitumen emulsion which is extensively used as a standard surface dressing binder in road maintenance programmes throughout Ireland. It offers the Roads Engineer a cost effective and high-tech tool to prolong the life of the road.

Watterson Surfacing and Bitumen Suppliers has a flexible manufacturing process with the capability of formulating products to meet the specific requirements of the customer.

BENEFITS OF CATIONIC 70%
  • Good adhesion to chippings, even when damp
  • Controlled break to allow proper mosaic formation
  • Extends the surface dressing season
  • Low temperature application for safer handling
  • Storage stable emulsion
Cationic 70% complies with the NRA Binder Specifications: RC 380/2007 Table 3

VIAFLEX

Viaflex is a polymer modified surface dressing binder comprising a unique blend of bitumen and SBS polymers. It has  been specially developed to extend the life of surface dressings compared to those carried out with standard70% emulsions, particularly on sites where higher traffic volumes and increased numbers of HGV’s are having adverse impacts.

BENEFITS OF VIAFLEX:

  • Better adhesion to chippings.
  • Greater durability/longer life.
  • Fast breaking to enable early trafficking.
  • Greater tolerance to extremes of temperatures.
  • Better textured mosaic.
  • Handles and sprays like a 70% emulsion.
  • Improved elasticity.

Viaflex complies with the NRA Binder Specifications: RC380 / 2007 Table 5.

CHIPPINGS

Chippings vary in sizes from 6mm, 10mm and 14mm.
